Béranger Balance Scale 1800s This is a stunning example of the commercial scales created in France in the mid-1800s! Joseph Béranger improved on the sensitivity and accuracy of the original Roberval scale by adding balance beams and then enclosing the critical mechanisms in a wooden case to protect them from damage and dust in the shops of 19th century France. This style was ultimately manufactured by companies around the world. But the balance scale we offer you here is from the early period of production in France (mid-1800s) by La Mulatiere in Lyon France - the up and coming center of food commerce in southern France. Dimensions: length 19" / 48cm width 8" / 20cm height 4" / 11cm weight 13 pounds / 6 kilos Disclosures, please look at the collection of photos. One brass plate has a bit of cracking. The marble top has a chip on one edge. I believe the original had a glass window in front of the measurements (but the tiny arrow markers are intact and very cool!)
